Interviewing

AI Mock Interview Tools Grade Delivery, Not Your Answer

They report on delivery, and they do not tell you whether an answer was right for the job. Yoodli's page names pacing and filler words as examples of what its report analyses. Big Interview's VideoAI page lists pace, vocabulary, eye contact and body language. Those are vendor descriptions, not audits. Google's free Interview Warmup redirected to a general tips page when checked on 1 September 2026. In two studies, feedback practice or coaching raised human-rated mock-interview scores. Take the content to a person who knows the role.

The takeThree evenings of reps against a public question bank is the wrong place to spend the week before an interview. The delivery gains are real, and they are also the cheapest part to fix: two recordings and one honest playback get most of them. The expensive part is having a specific story with a checkable detail in it, and a tool that counts your filler words has no way to tell you the story you picked was thin.

Where Olive fits

Open a role and see what the work shows

An Olive assessment is not an interview, and nothing drawn from how you sound or look enters the findings: you work a real assignment openly with an AI assistant, think aloud or type, and a person writes or edits the findings on what happened, in words. The candidate is granted the same report the employer reads, on every tier.

Assess your shortlist

What Do These Tools Actually Measure?

They measure how you sound and which words you use. Yoodli's interview-preparation page describes an AI roleplay that asks contextual follow-up questions based on your answers, then generates a speaking report with analytics such as pacing and filler words 1. Big Interview's VideoAI page names four things it evaluates: pace of speech, vocabulary, eye contact and body language 2.

Google's Interview Warmup was free, and it worked on a different channel. It transcribed your spoken answer in real time, then flagged which job-related terms and talking points you had covered 3. That is the simplest honest picture of transcript feedback: a machine reading the words, telling you which ones showed up. Nothing in that description says it judged whether the example you chose was any good.

None of those pages is an audit.

They are product copy, and neither paid tool's page states a method, a benchmark, or an accuracy figure.

What counts as rushing, what makes vocabulary stronger, how eye contact gets judged through a laptop camera: the categories are named and the reasoning stops there.

The disappearance is easy to miss. When checked on 1 September 2026, both of Interview Warmup's addresses redirected to a general Grow with Google article about interview tips 3. That article does not mention the tool, and points readers at Gemini Live instead. No notice from Google explaining the change turned up, so a retirement is an inference from the redirect rather than something the company said.

A ranked roundup that still puts it first has not rechecked the link.

Does That Feedback Match What an Employer Scores?

Partly, and the mismatch is the useful part. HireVue's 2025 Explainability Statement says its AI relies only on what the candidate says, and uses no video analysis and no other audio characteristics 4. It does not assess facial expressions, body language, background and surroundings, or tone of voice. Three of the four things Big Interview grades, pace, eye contact and body language, fall inside what that statement rules out.

HireVue wrote that statement about its own product.

It covers HireVue's AI-scored interviews and nothing else, and the document calls itself living, so it describes a 2025 configuration rather than whatever ran in an earlier year.

It also never claims the video goes unwatched. The recording exists, and a recruiter can play it.

So delivery practice trains you for the human who presses play, which is a real audience and not the one most people picture when they imagine an AI interview. The pace chart is aimed at a viewer. The transcript is what the model reads. Both come out of the same recording, and a tool that grades your posture is only ever speaking to the first of them.

There is an awkward version of this on the employer's side of the site. Hiring teams reading whether a structured interview still separates AI-coached candidates are told that coaching has beaten the public behavioural question bank. The advice there is to draw six to eight questions from decisions their own team argued about last quarter. The bank your practice tool rehearses against is the bank they are being told to retire.

Rehearsing a question an employer may already have retired is time the story needed more.

Does Practice With Feedback Raise Ratings?

Yes, in the one study that tested it directly, and a second found the same for coaching; both used human raters rather than software. Langer and colleagues randomly assigned 70 students at two German universities to one of two conditions 5. One group got virtual interview training: a simulated interview with a virtual character that analysed nonverbal behaviour and gave feedback as they spoke. The other got e-learning covering the same content.

In blind-rated mock interviews afterwards, the trained group scored higher on interview performance (d = 0.60) and on hireability (d = 0.55), and reported lower interview anxiety 5. The gain ran through their rated nonverbal behaviour. Anxiety itself did not explain it.

The numbers are softer than they look. Seventy students at two universities, one short mock interview each, and interrater reliability on the performance ratings of r = .45, which makes the effect sizes imprecise 5. What improved was delivery as human interviewers rated it, and that is the exact channel HireVue says its scorer ignores 4.

A gain in the room may not be a gain in the transcript.

The older study is about coaching rather than a product. Tross and Maurer put 144 participants through one of three levels of preparation before a structured past-behaviour interview: an introduction only, an introduction plus awareness training, or both plus skill training 6. The people who got the more comprehensive version received higher interview ratings, and what they had learned about the interview partly explained the difference 6.

Both outcomes are ratings in a research interview, not job offers.

Read together, they support something narrower than the marketing does. Rehearsing out loud with feedback moves how you come across, and understanding the format moves it too. Neither study tested a tool you can download tonight.

Use the Reps for Delivery, Then Get the Content Read

Spend the tool on what it can see, and route the content somewhere else. A practice tool will show you that you open every answer with so and fill the gaps with right, and that is worth one evening. Nothing on its page says it can tell you that the project you picked for the teamwork question was the one where nothing was at stake.

  • Record two answers and play them back before you open any chart. Most of what the report will say, you can hear.
  • Write the rubric yourself from the posting: the two or three things this employer said the job needs, and whether your answer touched them.
  • Take one story to somebody who has done the role, and ask what is missing from it.

The last one has no substitute, and the person does not have to be a mentor. Anyone who has sat on the hiring side for this kind of role can tell you in ten minutes that an example is thin.

None of these pages claims to know what this particular job needs, and someone who has done the role usually does.

Practising with a model is fine on the same terms. The candidate-side answer to whether practising interview answers with ChatGPT counts as cheating is that rehearsing beforehand is preparation, and the line sits at the call itself. Yoodli's page also sells a mode that runs during a real interview and gives private nudges it says the interviewer will not know about 1. That is not practice. It is the undisclosed live help that line is drawn against, unless the employer's rule for the round says otherwise.

If the round is a recorded one-way, the format is worth an hour on its own. How to prepare for a one-way video interview covers the mechanics a delivery chart leaves out: the mic check, the retake policy, and pulling the competencies out of the posting before you record anything.

Common questions

Is Google's Interview Warmup still available?

Not at its old addresses. When checked on 1 September 2026, both grow.google/interview-warmup and the certificates version redirected to a general Grow with Google article about interview tips 3. That page does not mention the tool, and points readers at Gemini Live instead. No notice from Google explaining the change turned up, so treating it as retired is an inference from the redirect rather than an announcement. What it used to do was transcribe your spoken answer in real time and flag which job-related terms and talking points you had covered.

Does practice-tool feedback match how an AI interview is scored?

Not closely, on one platform that has published what its scorer reads. HireVue's 2025 statement says its AI relies only on what the candidate says and does not assess facial expressions, body language, background and surroundings, or tone of voice 4. Pace, eye contact and body language, three of the four things Big Interview's video tool grades, fall inside what that statement rules out. That is the vendor's account of its own product rather than an audit, it covers HireVue only, and a recruiter can still watch the recording.

How much practice is enough before an interview?

Enough to stop hearing yourself for the first time on the call. Two or three recorded answers played back will surface most of what a speaking report would tell you about pace and filler words. Past that, the returns move to the content: which example you picked, what happened in it, and what you can point to that somebody could check. That part needs a reader, not another rep.

Do these tools work, or is that a marketing claim?

The evidence is about practice, not about any product you can buy. Langer and colleagues randomly assigned 70 students to a feedback simulator or to e-learning, and the simulator group scored higher in later blind-rated mock interviews on performance and hireability, with lower anxiety 5. Tross and Maurer found that more comprehensive coaching before a structured interview produced higher ratings among 144 participants 6. Both measured ratings in a research interview rather than hiring outcomes, Langer's sample was small, and neither tested a commercial tool.

Can I run one of these tools during the real interview?

Not without permission. Rehearsing beforehand is preparation; a tool prompting you during the call is live help, and the default line sits at the call itself. At least one vendor, Yoodli, sells a live mode whose page says it nudges you without your interviewer knowing 1, which is exactly the undisclosed help that line is drawn against. Where an employer has published a rule for the round, that rule governs. Where nothing is published, ask the recruiter before the call.

General guidance for hiring teams. What works at one company and one volume may not transfer to yours.

Olive assesses how a person works with AI. It does not detect AI-written documents, and it never produces a score, a ranking, or a match percentage for a person. Candidates read the same report the employer reads.
