It is 4:10pm and six aircraft are airborne. One reports a headwind that puts it under reserve on the return leg. One has a payload sensor disagreeing with itself. One is inbound to a site where the ground team has stopped answering the radio. Nothing is an emergency yet, and the operator has to decide, in the next ninety seconds, which of the three gets a human decision and which two are fine on their own.

That triage is the job. The flying is not.

The seat exists because the aircraft handles the flight. Route, separation, approach and recovery run autonomously, and the operator supervises a fleet: monitoring health telemetry, approving or holding launches, coordinating with ground crews and air traffic services, and taking a defined intervention when the system asks for one or when a human judgment is required about weather, airspace or the people underneath. One person to several airframes is the economic point of the design, and it is also what makes the hiring problem unfamiliar. You are not selecting for the best flyer.   • They can be interrupted mid-sentence and resume. Bring a deliberate interruption into the interview. This is a bench job full of radio calls; the recovery matters more than the fluency.

The anti-tells are just as clear. Somebody who describes the automation as an adversary to be outsmarted will fight the aircraft on a bad night. Somebody who has never read an incident report about a system they operated is not curious about failure. And be wary of the candidate whose entire case is a certificate. And the sleeper pool is the ground side of the business you already run: launch and recovery technicians who have watched a thousand cycles usually understand the aircraft's failure vocabulary better than anyone who arrived with a rating.

Ask every one of them how they got good with software that talks confidently. The candidates worth hiring have a concrete answer about AI in their own work, and it is rarely about a chatbot. They describe using an assistant to draft a procedure and then deleting the two steps it invented; running a model over a season of flight logs to cluster anomalies, then hand-checking each cluster against the raw telemetry; asking a model why a system behaved a certain way and then verifying the answer against the manufacturer's documentation before repeating it on the radio. That is the disposition the seat runs on, because the operator's console is already full of automated recommendations delivered with total confidence, and the person who has never watched an assistant overreach will not recognize the same tone coming from a flight computer. Where Do You Find These Operators, and How Do You Close Them?

Go where supervision of automated systems is already the daily work.
