Interviewing

When an Interview Link Expires, Ask the Employer to Reopen It

The link stops working, and on HireVue the only person who can reopen it is at the hiring company.HireVue's candidate help centre says only the hiring company can authorise a new attempt, and that it does so by sending a new interview link, while HireVue itself cannot. So the move is a short email to the recruiter, not a support ticket. Send it before the deadline if you still can, and after it if you cannot.

The takeThe standard advice, complete it as soon as possible, is fine and stops one sentence too early. It never says what to do on the morning you realise the window closed while you were on a shift, which is the morning this question turns urgent. The useful instruction is smaller and more awkward: write to the recruiter, say what happened in two lines, and ask for a new link. It may be declined. It costs one email to find out.

Where Olive fits

Open a role and see what the work shows

An Olive assessment is not an interview: it arrives as an employer-minted invite link good for 14 days, and the session runs on your own clock rather than a booked slot. A person writes or edits the six findings in words, and you are granted the identical report the employer reads, free.

Assess your shortlist

Who Can Reopen the Window?

The recruiter or coordinator whose name sits on the invitation email. HireVue's article on being disconnected mid-interview gives the same instruction from the other direction: finish the interview, then contact the company you applied to, which can send a retake if it feels one is needed. HireVue says it does not have permission to provide another interview itself 3.

If no name is on the invitation, the original job posting or the careers page often carries a route to a person.

Keep the message short. Two lines of fact and one line of ask does the whole job, and a long explanation invites a reader to weigh your reasons instead of your request.

  • Say: the role, the date the link arrived, one clause on what happened, and a request for a new link
  • Say: the days you are free, if the stage is a scheduled call rather than a recording
  • Not: an apology paragraph, a medical detail nobody asked for, or a claim about how well you would have done

Ask early, because the ask can carry a clock of its own. Karat publishes a redo process for an interview its clients' candidates have already sat. A candidate requests a redo within 24 hours of the original interview, picks a day and time, and answers a new set of questions 6. Karat then publishes both recommendations to the client, which decides whether to advance them 6.

Read that last part twice.

A second attempt does not always replace the first one, and at least one vendor says plainly that both results travel. That is Karat describing its own policy for its own clients, and it is not a rule anywhere else.

Nobody is obliged to reply.

Treat the email as one move in a search that keeps going while you wait for it, rather than as the thing the week now hangs on.

Start the Interview Early, and Read the Screen First

Open the link the day it arrives, even if you do not intend to finish that day. Spark Hire's candidate help says a candidate can pause and return through the interview link as many times as needed before the deadline, so on that platform the window and the sitting are separate things 4. Knowing which one you are looking at is most of the anxiety gone.

Looking is not free on every screen. The same Spark Hire article describes a question with limited think time as a countdown you start by clicking to view the question, with recording beginning automatically when the countdown ends 4. On HireVue, once a response has been submitted you cannot return to that question, inside an interview still running or one already finished 1.

So read the instructions page, and stop before question one.

Spark Hire's article also describes a practice video that can be reviewed and retaken before the real questions start, and a skip option for a candidate who has run out of takes and still does not want to submit an answer 4.

The practice round is where to find out what the buttons do.

The sitting is usually shorter than the dread. HireVue's 2025 explainability statement gives a typical AI-scored assessment as four to six asynchronous video questions plus two or three games, about 15 to 25 minutes in total 2. The same statement says how the candidate experiences the assessment is configurable by the company deploying it 2.

Those numbers are the vendor's own worked example rather than a measured average across deployments, and retries are a yes-or-no switch the employer sets 2. Two people can describe the same platform completely differently and both be right.

An hour is enough to use the extra days well. How to prepare for a one-way video interview in an hour sets out what to put in it: competencies pulled from the posting, one real example each, and a single watch-back.

Does Recording on Day One Help?

The documentation quoted here is silent on that. None of it says the day you record changes how the answer is read. The deadline is the deadline, and day three is inside it. What is worth using the extra days for is the answer itself, not an earlier timestamp.

Use them on the answer.

That is an absence of published evidence, not proof that timing never matters. Whether applying early matters works through the version of this question that applies to the application itself, where the answer turns on how the posting is being reviewed rather than on the clock.

A slot missed for a technical reason is a named case at some vendors. Alex, the AI interviewer formerly called Apriora, says in its candidate FAQ that a candidate who misses a slot because of a technical issue can take the interview later using the same link 5.

The same FAQ says Alex does not make final hiring decisions and does not automatically reject candidates, and that its recordings, transcripts and notes are shared with the employer's hiring team, where humans make the decisions 5.

That page is a vendor describing its own product and carries no date, and what an employer does with the notes afterwards sits outside the vendor's control.

If the deadline has already gone, the email is the same email it would have been yesterday. Say what happened, ask for a new link, and give the hour you were going to spend rereading the expired page to the next application instead.

Common questions

Can HireVue support give me a new interview link?

No. HireVue's candidate help centre says only the hiring company can authorise a new attempt, and that if it does, it sends a new interview link. The same page says HireVue is not involved in hiring decisions and cannot authorise retakes. Its article on being disconnected mid-interview gives the same instruction: finish the interview, then contact the company you applied to. Write to the recruiter rather than the support queue.

What do I write to the recruiter?

Three short lines. Name the role and the date the link arrived, say in one clause what happened, and ask whether a new link can be sent. If the stage is a scheduled call rather than a recording, add the days you are free. Leave out the apology paragraph, any medical detail nobody asked for, and any claim about how well you would have done. A long explanation invites the reader to weigh your reasons instead of answering your request.

Can I open the interview link and come back later?

On Spark Hire, yes: its candidate help says a candidate can pause and return through the interview link as many times as needed before the deadline. But the same article describes a question with limited think time as a countdown that starts when you click to view the question, with recording beginning automatically when it ends. On HireVue, a response you have submitted cannot be returned to. Open the link, read the instructions, and stop before question one if you are not ready.

Does it look bad if I finish on the last day?

Not on anything these platforms publish. None of the documentation quoted in this article says the day you record changes how the answer is read. Use the extra days on a better answer rather than an earlier timestamp. If the stage is a live call with a person rather than a recording, replying early is a courtesy worth extending in its own right, which is a separate point from how the answer is judged.

What if I missed the slot because my connection dropped?

Alex's candidate FAQ says a candidate who misses a slot because of a technical issue can take the interview later using the same link. On HireVue, an answer interrupted mid-recording has most likely been submitted, the platform will not reset that question, and the vendor's instruction is to finish the interview and then contact the company, which can send a retake if it feels one is needed. Both are vendors describing their own products.

General guidance for hiring teams. What works at one company and one volume may not transfer to yours.

Olive assesses how a person works with AI. It does not detect AI-written documents, and it never produces a score, a ranking, or a match percentage for a person. Candidates read the same report the employer reads.
