What Paying for AI Interview Practice Actually Buys

Pay only if you can name the problem you want fixed. The free layer comes first: HireVue, for one, ships a private practice round in its one-way interviews, and its preparation time and re-recording are the employer's settings, not a subscription's. Coaching raised interview ratings in two experiments, both on research interviews rather than job offers. No published study puts a paid AI practice tool against an offer rate.

The takeBuy reps, not a diagnosis. A subscription is easiest to sell in the week before an interview, when delivery feels like the last thing left that can change. Paid tools aim mostly at delivery. Nothing about the price makes them better at the part a structured interview is built to grade, which is whether you have three specific stories with a real decision inside each one.

Where Olive fits

Open a role and see what the work shows

An Olive assessment is not an interview, and nothing drawn from how you sound or look enters the findings: you work a real assignment openly with an AI assistant, think aloud or type, and a person writes or edits the findings on what happened. Nothing in it is sold to you, and you receive the same report the employer receives.

Assess your shortlist

Start With the Free Practice Already in the Interview

The cheapest practice may already be inside the interview you were invited to. HireVue's candidate help center says an OnDemand interview opens with three generic practice questions you can redo without limit 1. It also says those practice recordings are never uploaded, never visible to anyone but you, and gone once you move past the playback 1. That is a private place to fix sound, framing and pacing.

The limits on the real thing sit on that same page: the questions cannot be previewed, and the answers cannot be re-watched afterwards 1.

Two more free levers can sit in the employer's settings rather than in a subscription. Lukacik and Bourdage ran three mock asynchronous video interview experiments and found that longer preparation time and the chance to re-record raised interview performance ratings 2. Those were mock interviews with online-panel and student participants, with no job at stake and ratings from the researchers' own raters 2. Read them as evidence about the format, not a promise about yours.

Check the instructions screen before you start, because on HireVue, at least, the employer sets both of those 7.

None of that costs anything, and preparing for a one-way video interview in an hour is the rest of the free version.

What Does the Coaching Research Actually Show?

The coaching research shows that structured preparation raises interview ratings, measured on research interviews rather than on hiring outcomes. Tross and Maurer assigned 144 people to one of three coaching conditions of increasing comprehensiveness before a structured past-behaviour interview 3. Those who received the more comprehensive coaching received higher ratings, and how much they knew about the interview partly explained the effect 3.

That was a post-test-only experiment with human raters and a single research interview, and the abstract reports no effect sizes 3.

A second study speaks to the fairness worry underneath the question. Maurer, Solamon and Lippstreu compared coached and uncoached samples of public safety job incumbents, 146 in all, on a situational panel interview in one setting, without random assignment 4. Predictive validity and reliability were higher in the coached sample 4. The coaching they studied was content-focused, meant to help people convey relevant material accurately, so it says nothing about tactics aimed at posture or keyword stuffing.

The closest thing to what a paid tool sells was tested in 2016. Langer and colleagues randomly assigned 70 students at two German universities either to a simulated interview with a virtual character that analysed nonverbal behaviour and gave real-time feedback, or to e-learning covering the same content 5. In blind-rated mock interviews afterwards, the simulator group scored higher on interview performance, d = 0.60, and the effect ran through their rated nonverbal behaviour 5.

The sample was small and the interrater reliability was low, so that effect size is imprecise 5.

None of these studies measured a job offer.

On the evidence that exists, preparing properly is not cheating, and none of it tested a paid AI practice tool.

What Are You Actually Buying?

Feedback on delivery, mostly. Big Interview's VideoAI page says the tool evaluates four things in a recorded practice answer: pace of speech, vocabulary, eye contact and body language, alongside cutting filler words 6. That is a vendor describing its own product on a marketing page, with no method, benchmark or accuracy figure attached to any of the four 6.

That four-item list runs into a problem: three of them are signals that at least one major employer-side scorer says it does not read. HireVue's 2025 explainability statement says its AI relies only on the transcribed words of an answer, using no video analysis and no other audio characteristics 7. The same document names what it does not assess: facial expressions, body language, background and surroundings, and tone of voice 7.

That is also one vendor describing one product, and the recording still exists for a recruiter to watch 7. So delivery feedback prepares you for the human viewer more than for the transcript. The human viewer is a real audience, and worth a few reps.

Do not go looking for Google's Interview Warmup by name. Its archived page described a free tool that transcribed spoken answers in real time and then flagged which job-related terms and talking points an answer had covered 8. On 1 September 2026 both of its addresses redirected to a general Grow with Google article on interview tips, and no notice explaining the change was found 8.

Treat its retirement as an inference from the redirect rather than an announcement.

When Is a Subscription Worth Paying For?

When you can name the problem before you pay. Running long on every answer, freezing on the first question, three sentences of preamble before anything specific: those are visible on a recording. Repeated timed reps with feedback are a reasonable way to work on them. A general sense of being underprepared is not a problem a tool can find for you.

Test the free layer against the paid one on that same problem. The platform's practice round, a friend willing to ask two follow-ups, and one phone recording you actually watch back can surface the obvious delivery habits within an hour. If the habit survives all three, structured paid reps are a defensible purchase rather than an anxious one.

Two things are worth checking before the card comes out: whether the price is a renewing subscription, and whether the trial covers enough reps to answer the question you bought it for. Both are ordinary consumer questions, and the week before an interview is an easy time to skip them.

It also helps to read what employers are told about the same ground. Whether structured interviews still separate AI-coached candidates is written for hiring teams, and its answer is that coaching wears out the public behavioural question bank rather than the structure. The questions that survive are the ones about decisions you actually made, which is the part no subscription can rehearse for you.

Preparing with ChatGPT covers the free version of the rehearsal, and where the line sits between preparing with a model and running one during the call.

Common questions

Is the free practice inside the interview platform enough?

Often, for the mechanical part. HireVue's candidate help center says its OnDemand interview includes three generic practice questions that can be redone without limit, and that the practice recordings are never uploaded and cannot be seen by anyone else. That covers sound, framing and pacing. It does not cover the content of your answers, because the real questions cannot be previewed and the real answers cannot be re-watched.

Does practising with an AI tool count as cheating?

Rehearsing beforehand is preparation, and the research on coaching does not treat it as contamination. In a validation study of a situational panel interview with 146 public safety job incumbents, predictive validity and reliability were higher in the coached sample than in the uncoached one, though the samples were not randomly assigned, and the coaching studied was content-focused. Using an assistant live during the interview itself is a different question: the employer's published rule for that round decides it, and where nothing is published, ask or arrive unaided.

Is Google's Interview Warmup still available?

It appears not. As of 1 September 2026, both of its addresses redirect to a general Grow with Google article about interview tips that does not mention the tool. No Google notice explaining the change was found, so retirement is an inference from the redirect rather than an announcement. The archived page described a tool that transcribed spoken answers in real time and flagged which job-related terms and talking points an answer had covered.

Will a paid tool tell me whether my answer was any good?

It will mostly tell you how the answer came across. Big Interview's VideoAI page says the tool evaluates pace of speech, vocabulary, eye contact and body language in a recorded practice answer, three of which are delivery rather than substance. That is the vendor's own description of its product, not an audit. For whether the content is right for the role, the useful reader is a person who has done the job or hired for it.

What kind of practice raised ratings in the research?

More comprehensive practice, and practice with feedback. Tross and Maurer assigned 144 people to three coaching conditions before a structured past-behaviour interview, and the more comprehensive the coaching, the higher the ratings. In a separate trial, 70 students given simulator practice with real-time feedback outperformed an e-learning control in blind-rated mock interviews, at d = 0.60, an imprecise estimate from a small sample. Both were research interviews with human raters rather than hiring outcomes, and the simulator effect ran through nonverbal behaviour.
