This page is a draft. Counsel has not reviewed it yet, and the wording may change before it is final.
The short version
Our detector scores the text in memory and de-identifies any personal information for additional training. A deep check sends up to 8 sentences from the text to Google (Gemini, in our own cloud project) to be judged, and search words drawn from them to the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia search). The titles in its reference list go to Crossref and OpenAlex. A school email's domain, and what that domain's home page shows, go to Google to confirm it is a school. Support and sales messages may be sent to Anthropic to draft a reply.
Information we collect
Firebase Authentication, a Google service, handles sign-in with Google or with an email and password, and stores your email address for us.
Your account holds your plan, how much of its allowance you have used, the first link that brought you to the site if there was one, and your checks while history is on.
When you send the contact, support or quote form, we keep what you typed in it, so we can reply.
To limit misuse, the service holds the address your request came from for the length of a rate limit.
What happens to the text you check
Your text travels over TLS to our detectors, which we run ourselves on a cloud GPU provider. Our detector scores the text in memory and de-identifies any personal information for additional training.
The de-identified text is used for additional training of our detector.
For a check you run without an account, your own browser keeps the text for up to 7 days so you can sign in and make a link; clearing your browser's site data removes it.
In an account, your history keeps a check and its text while history is on. New accounts start with history off.
A verification link keeps a keyed fingerprint of the text. When someone pastes a text to confirm a link, it is compared with that fingerprint.
We never send your text to another company's AI detector.
Deep checks: Google, Wikimedia, Crossref and OpenAlex
A deep check sends up to 8 sentences from your text to Google, through Gemini on Google Cloud's Vertex AI in our own project, which judges each sentence against passages found for it. There is no separate consent step. A deep check does not use Google Search.
Search words drawn from those sentences go to the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia search) and, for cited papers, to Crossref and OpenAlex. A sentence written in the first person is never looked up, and nothing containing a digit, an email address or a web address goes into a search.
The titles in a reference list are looked up in Crossref and OpenAlex, two public indexes of published work.
A deep check runs only when you ask for one, and only on a text the standard detector read as human.
Support and sales messages: Anthropic
Messages you send through the support, contact or quote forms may be sent to Anthropic (Claude) to draft a reply. A person approves replies before they are sent. Message text is not kept in our logs.
The Education plan
Whether you get the free Education plan depends on your email address. To check it, we send Google, through Gemini on Google Cloud's Vertex AI in our own project, the domain of your address (the part after the @, never the rest of it) and what the domain's public home page returns: its web address after any redirect, its status code, its title, its description and up to 2,000 characters of its text. If the page does not answer, we send the error instead. Gemini says whether the domain belongs to a school.
Gemini may use Google Search grounding for this, which means it looks the school up on Google Search. Google keeps those search queries for up to three days. The decision is emailed to you through Mailgun. A domain decided recently is not looked up again.
Payments
Pro, Max and Department are paid by card through Stripe. Stripe holds your card details; we do not see them.
Cookies and browser storage
Firebase keeps you signed in. The site keeps two records in your browser's local storage: the first link that brought you here (30 days), and the text of a signed-out check (7 days). There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
Children
You must be 13 or older to have an account. In a middle school, only teachers have accounts, and students under 13 may not sign up. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger than 13.
Deleting your data
Delete one check, or every check, in the app. Deleting a check turns its links off.
To delete your account and everything with it, use the contact form and choose "Privacy or deleting data", or email hello@olive.is.
Governing law
The governing law and the regional disclosures for this policy are not set yet. Ask us: hello@olive.is.
