Before your school adopts a check
A published false-flag rate on student writing, the sentences behind each result, and verification links students can hand in.
Limits
Our standard detector flagged 0 of 600 human-written papers in its release test (95% upper bound 0.50%), 1 of 549 held-out human papers, as Mixed (upper bound 0.86%), 5 of 9,305 real student essays, all as Mixed, none as AI, and missed 0 of 481 wholly machine-written held-out papers (upper bound 0.62%).
Fairness testing
Our standard detector flagged 0 of 1,195 essays by learners of English, from one university English language program written 2005 to 2012, and our students detector, shown as a note, flagged 4 of the same 1,195. That is a count, not proof of fairness.

Verified human: the standard detector read this text as human. It covers this text on this date. It does not show who wrote it or how.
Writing the policy
A policy that uses the check should say what each result leads to. Three lines most policies need:
- Not verified is a reason to ask about the writing, never a finding of misconduct on its own.
- A student can hand in a verification link, and staff can confirm it by pasting the submitted text.
- Drafts and version history are asked for before any decision.
Where it falls short
It called 20 of 176 humanized AI papers human and, in a newer test of one humanizer tool, 231 of 255 rewritten long papers and 122 of 136 rewritten essays human, so a humanizer tool can get text past it. Every human-written document in its tests was written before 2022. Writing done since AI tools became common has not been tested, and neither has writing done with grammar checkers or translation tools.
