Terms of Service

This page is a draft. Counsel has not reviewed it yet, and the wording may change before it is final.
What these terms cover
These terms apply when you use the web app, the verification links, the API or the MCP server. You accept them when you create an account, run a check or send a request to the API.
Your account
Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
The free Education plan is for anyone with a school or university address. Nobody else can create or manage an account for you.
You must be 13 or older to have an account. In a middle school, only teachers have accounts.
Plans and billing
Each plan has an allowance and a number of deep checks a month, listed on the pricing page. Pro and Max are billed monthly by card through Stripe until you cancel. Unused allowance does not carry over.
The Department plan is billed monthly by card through Stripe like Pro and Max, and covers the seats our staff add to it. School and district plans are by quote, on the terms in the quote.
Companies that handle your data
Using the product means some of your data passes through the companies below. The Privacy Policy says what each one receives and why.
Firebase Authentication, a Google service, handles sign-in with Google or with an email and password, and stores your email address for us.
A deep check sends up to 8 sentences from your text to Google, through Gemini on Google Cloud's Vertex AI in our own project, which judges each sentence against passages found for it. There is no separate consent step. A deep check does not use Google Search.
Search words drawn from those sentences go to the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia search) and, for cited papers, to Crossref and OpenAlex. A sentence written in the first person is never looked up, and nothing containing a digit, an email address or a web address goes into a search.
The titles in a reference list are looked up in Crossref and OpenAlex, two public indexes of published work.
A deep check runs only when you ask for one, and only on a text the standard detector read as human.
Messages you send through the support, contact or quote forms may be sent to Anthropic (Claude) to draft a reply. A person approves replies before they are sent. Message text is not kept in our logs.
Whether you get the free Education plan depends on your email address. To check it, we send Google, through Gemini on Google Cloud's Vertex AI in our own project, the domain of your address (the part after the @, never the rest of it) and what the domain's public home page returns: its web address after any redirect, its status code, its title, its description and up to 2,000 characters of its text. If the page does not answer, we send the error instead. Gemini says whether the domain belongs to a school.
Gemini may use Google Search grounding for this, which means it looks the school up on Google Search. Google keeps those search queries for up to three days. The decision is emailed to you through Mailgun. A domain decided recently is not looked up again.
Pro, Max and Department are paid by card through Stripe. Stripe holds your card details; we do not see them.
We never send your text to another company's AI detector.
API and MCP terms
Keep your API key secret. Requests made with it count against your plan and are subject to the limits in the API reference. Do not share a key, use automation to get around a limit, or try to rebuild the detectors from their responses.
If a key leaks, delete it in the app and make a new one, or email hello@olive.is.
What a result is
"Verified human" means the standard detector read the text as human when it was checked. It covers that text on that date. It does not show who wrote it or how. The mark is for words a person wrote, as handed in. Text rewritten by a humanizer does not qualify, even if a person wrote the first draft. Our detector does not catch every rewrite: in our tests it missed most rewrites by one tool.
A result is a statistical reading from our detectors. It is not a certification and it can be wrong. The model card states how often each detector was wrong in testing, and under which conditions.
"Not verified" means the check could not confirm the text as written by a person. It is not a finding that anyone used AI or cheated.
Acceptable use
Do not use a result as the only basis for an academic or employment decision about a person. A flag should be reason to look closer and not verified proof of cheating.
Do not make, sell or share a verification link for writing you did not write as checked, and do not present a link as covering a different text. Do not try to copy, retrain or resell the detectors. Do not submit text you do not have the right to submit.
Ending your account
To close your account, use the contact form or email hello@olive.is. Closing it turns its links off. We may suspend or close an account that breaks the acceptable use terms, with notice where we reasonably can give it.
Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided as available, with no warranty that results will be free of errors. The limits on our liability are not set yet. Ask us: hello@olive.is.
Governing law
The governing law and the venue for disputes under these terms are not set yet. Ask us: hello@olive.is.
