A Turnitin AI Score Counts Flagged Sentences, Not Students

A Turnitin AI writing score is the share of a paper's qualifying prose sentences that Turnitin's model marked as AI-generated or AI-paraphrased. It is a model's estimate about prose, not a record of how the paper was written, and it says nothing about a person. Below 20 percent Turnitin now shows an asterisk with no number and no highlights, and under 300 words of prose it gives no score. Turnitin says it does not determine misconduct. What follows a score is the draft history and a conversation about the writing.

AI detection in education: what a detector reads, what a flag is evidence of, and what a school does with one.

Detectors · Pangram · Humanizers · Classroom · Policy · Writing

The detection beat: how AI-text detectors work and where they fail, what the published studies measured, what Pangram, Turnitin and the rest say about themselves, and what a teacher, a student or a school does when a flag lands. The question underneath every piece is what a reading is evidence of and what it is not. It offers no way to prove who wrote a document, and no number that stands for a person.
